St John Marie Vianney (1786-1859) was a French Catholic priest. He is known for his extraordinary spiritual gifts, particularly in the sacrament of confession, where he spent up to 18 hours a day hearing confessions and guiding souls.
Vianney was born in Dardilly, France, and grew up during the French Revolution. He was ordained a priest in 1815 and became the parish priest of Ars-sur-Formans in 1818. He spent the rest of his life there, dedicating himself to prayer, mortification, and serving his parishioners.
Vianney was known for his humility, simplicity, and kindness. He was also a fierce defender of the faith and a zealous promoter of vocations to the priesthood. He was canonized a saint in 1925 and declared the patron saint of parish priests in 1929.
